Got Barbecue Sauce, is a question that needs to be answered with confidence because your reputation is on the line. All Barbecue Masters have their favorite sauce and they feel it makes their preparation stand out from all the rest. Being southern and growing up around large gatherings that involved barbecue I have tasted a lot of barbecue sauce. Some were homemade and others purchased both were good. However, I am here to give you my opinion on what I think is the best BBQ Sauce I have ever tasted.

Barbecue A Brief History

A form of barbecuing was first observed by the Spanish conquistadors when they arrived in the Caribbean. They observed the indigenous people preserving meat by placing it on racks over small fires. The smoke would keep the insects at bay and help in the preservation of the meat. The word “BARBECUE” is believed to be derived from a West Indies word for this process  “BARBACOA”. The preservation of meat over an open flame has been around as long as man has been here. However, in southern America it has become a religious experience. The Barbecue Sauce being used is the key to making it OK or Out Of This World.

Let’s Get Saucy

BBQ Sauce

BBQ Sauce can proudly be clamed as an American invented condiment. It was invented to make the preparation of meat over an open flame not just for preserving. But for the meat to taste better and for the now enjoyment of that meat.

Three Types of Sauce

According to research by The Smithsonian, there are three main types of barbecue sauces. Each were influenced by those who settled in those areas. In North Carolinas the sauce is vinegar-based because it is derived from the sauces from the Caribbean. In South Carolina the sauce is mustard-based derived from the German settlers living there. If you know anything about German foods, mustard is basically a food group. Then you have the Memphis BBQ Sauce which is a tomato-based sauce, with molasses, that creates it’s sweet and spicy flavor because molasses was a commodity that was easily obtained in that port city. Besides Memphis has a sweet and spicy atmosphere anyway, mostly spicy as anyone who’s been there knows.
